Egg donation

How does it work?

When a woman cannot produce eggs due to the loss of the ovarian function, by poor quality or due to hereditary illnesses, the donation is an adequate option to give couples the opportunity to achieve pregnancy. The eggs are donated by healthy and young women.

This process requires the synchronisation of the cycles of the donor and of the recipient by means of hormonal treatment. The donation of eggs is an act that is carried out of an altruistic, anonymous, and voluntary form, although a financial compensation is permitted for the possible inconveniences that the procedure can cause the donor. At present, this compensation is about s 900 euros.

It is a matter of an anonymous act , confidentiality of the donor’s health data is guaranteed in accordance with the Spanish law. We can not divulge patient donor information.

The eggs donors will comply with a series of requirements to be able to be included in a program of donation.

How many times can I be a donor?

According to the law, a person can be a donor many times up to a maximum of 6 children, this includes her own children.

What risks does a donation involve?

The risks are minimum. They can be the following:

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome/strong>: To minimize this risk ultrasounds and hormonal tests are carried out. Besides, the hyperstimulation is used to producing itself normally when the woman remains an expectant mother; in this case, the donor is not going to receive the embryos and therefore this risk diminishes.
  • La The sedation- anaesthetic is controlled by the anaesthetist, for some 10-20 minutes and does not require intubation. In any case, the patient will be monitored during the time that the intervention lasts.

Is it uncomfortable to donate eggs?

No, the discomfort is minimum because the injections of hormones are subcutaneous with very fine needles and the puncture of the follicles is done with sedation.

Can I change my mind about donation?

The donation will only be revocable when the donor needs her own eggs, provided that they are available at the time. Thus she can renounce the donation at any moment and without having that to give any type of explanation to the responsible centre.

Is the confidentiality of my data guaranteed?

The law is obliged to guarantee both anonymity of the egg donor and the couple recipient couple of the eggs, and also the results of any tests that were carried out.

Can egg donation affect to my subsequent fertility?

No, because a healthy woman produces from birth some 400.000 eggs; of which only a few (some 400 approximately) mature thus having the possibility to be fertilised.

The remainder are lost in the natural form in each cycle. Therefore, it is a way to take advantage of the eggs that would be lost. Once the extraction of the eggs is carried out, the donor will ovulate again in a natural form and will be able to have children if thus desired.
