Artificial insemination with a donor
What is it?
It is a technique that consists of the introduction of semen, which is previously treated in the laboratory, then inserted directly into the interior of the uterus of the woman, within a few hours of ovulation.
How does it work?
To carry out an insemination, previously it is necessary to stimulate the ovaries in order to obtain the growth and ripening of 2 ó 3 follicles. For this we administer daily gonadotropins (medication to stimulate the ovaries) in the form of subcutaneous, and ultrasounds and hormone analysis are carried out to control the follicular development. When an optimum development of the follicles has been obtained this proceeds to the induction of ovulation.
On the day of insemination the sperm sample is proceed in order to concentrate the mobile sperm and to separate from the seminal plasma.
When do we use this treatment?
The main reasons are problems with the azoospermia (lack of spermatozoa in the semen) or in serious cases in the ejaculation. In the case of the female, the artificial inseminations both the conjugal and the one with donor, when there are blockages to the Fallopian tubes, dysfunctional ovulation or cervical factors. This form of treatment can also be used if the reason for sterility is not known.
Currently this treatment has become an option for single women or female couples.
¿Cual es la duración del tratamiento?
El tratamiento comienza a partir del 2-3 día de regla y suele durar aproximadamente 8-10 días. El test de embarazo se realiza a los 15 días tras la inseminación.
What risks are there?
The risks are minimum, since it is a technique that is carried out on an outpatient basis and does not need anaesthetic nor sedation. The stimulation is carried out with low doses of gonadotropins therefore the risks of hyperstimulation or multiple pregnancy are practically nil.
Rates of success?
The rate of success with insemination is around the 20% after 1 insemination and 70% after undergoing 4 inseminations. Once 4 inseminations have been carried out and pregnancy has not been achieved is recommendable to pass onto other techniques of reproduction.
